General model history:

The Dodge Custom 880 was introduced in January 1962 to fill the gap within the Chrysler Corporation left by the discontinuation of the DeSoto brand. As a large, comfortable full-size Dodge in the upper mid-range segment, it was aimed at buyers looking for space, equipment and effortless V8 performance.

For the 1963 model year, the 880 received its own distinctive design with a bold, wide grille. Alongside the Custom 880, a simpler base "880" model was introduced, offered only as a sedan and a pillared station wagon. The Custom series wagons, by contrast, featured the elegant pillarless hardtop design. A 361 cu in V8 was standard, while the more powerful 383 cu in big block was available as an option for the first time. Power was delivered, if desired, via the proven TorqueFlite automatic with its typical push-button controls – a hallmark of Chrysler vehicles of that era.

1963 was also the final year in which the hardtop wagon was offered, making Dodge and Chrysler the last American brands to feature this exceptional body style. A total of around 28,200 Dodge 880 and Custom 880 models were built for the 1963 model year – of which only 1,365 were 9-passenger Custom 880 Station Wagons. Today, this wagon is correspondingly rare: a wonderful opportunity for collectors, stylish family outings or classic car meets.
