General model history:
The BMW 328, a legendary sports car from Bayerische Motoren Werke, which enjoyed great success in the 1930s.
The BMW 328 was first presented at the 1936 Eifel Race on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring. Under the leadership of Ernst Jakob Henne, it achieved an impressive average speed of 101.6 km/h and dominated the sports car class up to 2000 cm³. According to BMW AG, a total of 464 units were built by early 1940, while other sources report 462 units. The BMW 328 was considered one of the “dream sports cars” of its time, with its predecessor being the BMW 319/1.
The 328 is an open two-seater with a chassis and suspension derived from the BMW 319. The engine block and brakes were taken from the four-seater 326 touring car. In the 326 model, the six-cylinder in-line engine with a displacement of two liters and parallel hanging valves produced 50 hp (38 kW) at 3750 rpm. In the BMW 328, however, the engine was optimized with two updraft carburetors and inlets and outlets on one side. Rudolf Schleicher designed a new aluminum cylinder head equipped with V-shaped overhead valves, hemispherical combustion chambers, and a compression ratio of 7.5:1 (instead of 6:1). This enabled the engine to achieve an output of 80 to 90 hp.
