General model history:
The Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider is an open-top Gran Turismo sports car that was produced from 1962 to 1965 by the Italian automaker Alfa Romeo. It was part of the 2600 series, which was introduced as the successor to the Alfa Romeo 2000 and represented the last Alfa Romeo model family to feature a classic inline-six engine and a solid rear axle. The 2600 Spider combined sporty performance with superior touring comfort and was aimed at discerning customers seeking an elegant convertible with Italian design and powerful technology.
Development of the model series began in the late 1950s with the goal of further advancing the successful 2000 series in terms of technology and performance. At the heart of the vehicle was a newly designed inline six-cylinder engine with a displacement of 2,584 cm³, two overhead camshafts, and a light-alloy cylinder head. In the Spider, the engine produced 145 PS (107 kW) thanks to a triple-carburetor system from Solex, enabling a top speed of around 195 km/h. Power was transmitted as standard via a fully synchronized five-speed manual transmission—a modern solution for its time that contributed significantly to the vehicle’s sporty character. Independent front suspension, disc brakes on the front axle, and precise steering ensured balanced handling.
The body of the 2600 Spider was created at the historic Carrozzeria Touring in Milan and was built according to the “Superleggera” principle developed by Touring. This involved constructing a lightweight aluminum body over a framework of thin steel tubes, which reduced weight while achieving a high degree of stability. The design was characterized by balanced proportions, a long hood, a low waistline, and elegant curves. The front was defined by the brand’s signature Alfa Romeo grille (“Scudetto”) and two large dual headlights. The harmoniously designed rear end and the subtle chrome accents lent the Spider a timeless elegance, making it one of the most stylish open-top Alfa Romeo models of the 1960s.
In 1963, the Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider was at the height of its production run and was considered the Milan-based manufacturer’s exclusive top-of-the-line model. It was sold primarily in the European and North American markets and competed with high-end open-top Gran Turismo cars from other Italian and British manufacturers. Despite its outstanding craftsmanship, powerful engineering, and elegant design, production remained relatively low due to its high retail price. A total of approximately 2,255 units of the 2600 Spider were produced between 1962 and 1965.
Explicit data about this car:
The car was registered as a U.S. model in August 1963, but was registered in Germany as early as May 1964. It had only three owners through 2011. The original old cardboard registration certificate is still available.
In 2011, the car was sold to its current owner in Austria and now also has an Austrian individual approval.
Since 2007, all work performed on the vehicle has been well documented, including the transmission overhaul at Tom Fischer’s shop and the replacement of the cylinder head gasket (both in 2017).
A new TÜV inspection was performed just recently.
