General model history:

The BMW M1 is one of the most fascinating sports cars ever to bear the Munich-based manufacturer's emblem. Developed in the late 1970s, it was the first vehicle to be designed entirely by BMW Motorsport. The aim was to create a road-legal super sports car that would also serve as the basis for use in motorsport.

The design was created by Giorgetto Giugiaro and featured clean, wedge-shaped lines that perfectly reflected the style of the late 1970s. The M1 was equipped with a mid-mounted, high-revving six-cylinder in-line engine with a displacement of 3.5 litres and an output of around 277 hp. In the racing version, the output could be well over 400 hp.

The body was made of fibreglass-reinforced plastic, manufactured by Italdesign, while final assembly took place in Germany. Due to the complex manufacturing process and the economic circumstances at the time, only slightly more than 450 units were produced. Today, the M1 is considered an icon – a symbol of the combination of racing technology, craftsmanship and exclusive design.
