General model history:
The 1989 Trabant marked the end of an automotive development that characterised the streets of the GDR for three decades. As the last evolutionary stage of classic two-stroke technology, this model symbolises the final phase of a technical concept that was once considered progressive but was increasingly perceived as outdated towards the end of the GDR.
The Trabant 601 series, which was introduced in 1964, was only cautiously developed further over the years. The characteristic air-cooled two-cylinder, two-stroke engine with a displacement of almost 600 cc remained the centrepiece of the vehicle - a simple, robust unit that was easy to maintain and worked reliably even under difficult conditions. However, while automotive technology was developing rapidly worldwide, the GDR stuck to tried and tested technology - for both economic and ideological reasons.
Until 1989, the Trabant only received minor technical improvements, such as to the chassis, electrics and interior. Visually, it remained virtually unchanged. The 1989 model in particular shows the peak of standardisation and series maturity before a new chapter was opened with the political change and German reunification.
Explicit data about this car:
This vehicle was purchased by the then owner in 1989 and used immediately to flee to the West.
The car has an exceptionally low total mileage of just 3,000 kilometres. Since its last use, it has been stored in a climate-controlled garage and is in almost mint condition.
All original factory stickers have been retained, as have the complete on-board tools and the original GDR licence plates.
The vehicle comes with a dealer purchase contract.
Note: The car is currently not roadworthy. Among other things, the tank and carburettor need to be cleaned.
