General model history:

The Espada, known internally as the Tipo 108, was the fourth model of the brand founded in 1963 after the 350 GT/400 GT, the Islero and the Miura. As the first fully four-seater Gran Turismo, it was the result of Ferruccio Lamborghini's efforts to offer a wide range of models. The Espada was produced in three series. Lamborghini produced a total of 1217 examples of the coupé.

Production of the Espada was discontinued in 1978 when Lamborghini found itself in economic difficulties. At the time, Lamborghini was heavily in debt to suppliers, including Bertone, where the bodywork was produced. Lamborghini subsequently concentrated on the Countach, which - unlike the Espada - was produced almost entirely in-house and made a profit.

A special feature of the Espada rear is the vertical second rear window.

The body of the Espada was designed by Bertone. The executive designer was Marcello Gandini. The shape was developed from two designs that Bertone had presented to the public in 1967. In many accounts, Bertone's Lamborghini Marzal concept car is cited as the immediate predecessor of the Espada. In fact, the Espada only has the side profile in common with this mid-engined coupé with large glazed gullwing doors. The Bertone Pirana, a front-engined coupé based on the Jaguar E-Type, was more similar. The body of the first Espada prototype was based on the wooden mold of the Pirana.
The body is made of sheet steel and the hood is made of aluminum.
